What is an "Acoustic Stompbox"?

Starting as far back as the 1920s, blues singers would stomp their feet on porch boards to add rhythm to their playing while they sang about hard times and triflin' women. As time went on, many of them replaced the porch boards with a drum kit, but the desire to tap their foot while they played remained.

Ever since the start of the 21st century, more and more guitarists are leaving the band behind to start a solo career as a singer/songwriter. The problem that many of them face is where to get the rhythm. If you're a singer/songwriter, you could always bang on the sides of your guitar, but do you really want to risk damaging a guitar you paid hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for? And what if you play electric rather than acoustic or you need a fast driving rhythm while playing a complicated musical phrase? You can only do so much with two hands.

With the Griffintone Thumper, you can now harness an authentic bass drum type of sound in a small portable device that will easily fit in your gig bag or guitar case.

Also, with the advancement and increased availability of MIDI equipment and USB/MIDI equipment, electronic musicians and DJs are multiplying daily. The problem is that unless you want to go out and buy an expensive electronic drumkit, you're generally limited to pushing buttons with your fingers on many of the MIDI drum "brains" on the market. What if you've got some experience as a drummer and want to play out a line using drumsticks?

Because of the type of pick-up used in the Griffintone Thumper, it can easily be hooked up to a MIDI controller and used to trigger MIDI events, sounds, samples, or loops.

Easily add percussion to any musical style just by tapping your foot. Also playable with hands, fingers, drumsticks, keys, or anything else you want to tap or drag across the surface. If that's not enough for you, run it through some FX pedals and build your own unique sound.

This instrument is also known as a timber acoustic stomp box, foot percussion, foot pedal, cajon, cajon foot pedal, percussion box, box drum, porch board bass, rhythm box, acoustic drum box, stomp box drum, foot stomp, bass drum trigger, foot stompbox, bass foot pedal.

Below is a Google map put together back in June 2010 when we were building the N.U.T. Box Acoustic Stompbox to show where all our satisfied customers were from. Through primarily word of mouth, we sold around 400 N.U.T. Boxes worldwide in that first year before we stopped production (outselling all of our competitors on eBay and Etsy combined).

When comparing the Griffintone Thumper to the older N.U.T. Box, the Thumper blows the N.U.T. Box out of the water in sound, usability, and quality. If you want one of the best acoustic stompboxes available without breaking the bank in the process, you'll want to get your hands on a Griffintone Thumper.
