After nearly 2 years in development, progress is finally underway on getting the prototype of the Griffintone Thumper ready for production. Each unit will be constructed out of hand-selected, locally harvested White Ash and Black Walnut tonewoods. For the electronics, we're using American-made Switchcraft 1/4" jacks and an immensely powerful pickup to allow you to connect the unit to your amp, soundboard, and/or MIDI drum unit.
Above is a shot of what the Thumper looks like so far. It's almost ready. In fact, right now there's not much left to do before we can start getting it ready to manufacture and sell.
At the time of writing this, it still needs the following:
- A little more sanding to remove the tool marks and soften the corners.
- Laser engraving the Griffintone griffin logo into the top (once we can meet up with the laser engraver to get it done).
- The application of a few coats of oil-based varnish (if it's been good enough for violins over the past few hundred years, it's good enough for us).
- Application of the non-skid pad to the bottom and testing it's functionality.
Preliminary tests of the unit have been fantastic. After hooking it up to an old American made Crate Bass practice amp we had lying around, we almost had to turn the low EQ knob completely off to get the stompbox to NOT sound like a bass drum. Also, the tapered front edge makes it really comfortable to tap on with your foot while seated or standing.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to releasing the stompboxes to the public.
